A lesser-known and seldom-discussed factor in King Louis's fall from power was his loss of grace and the complete erosion of public trust following his failed escape to Varennes. Before a king falls from power, he first falls from grace. And even before that, he fails to read the public mood.
“Let them eat cake” may be just a rumour, but it reflects how deeply disconnected Louis was in the opulence of Versailles from the suffering and unrest in Paris.
Ultimately, it was not hunger or suffering, but the lies and betrayal of King Louis XVI that jolted the public into shifting from a constitutional monarchy to a republic after years of turmoil.
There are plenty of lessons for our present day Louis inspired dictators: The public is quick to forgive a genuine apology, but lies, deceit, and betrayal from those they hold in high regard—not so much.
Read the room, sir. It may already be too late.
Power glasses always create distorted vision. If one fails to see or feel something, it is a failure not on the message but on the receiver and the personal tools used to code this message. While the message may also be challenging to understand, most people in power are more invested in vanity and ego, which makes it even more challenging to see beyond themselves.
Army leadership does not have the skillset or ability to read anything. They can not speak eloquently let alone deal with the massive issues facing our country. The issues created solely by these low level thugs in uniform enjoying so much power without any control. It was a pure myth a fraud that Army follows strict merit on promotions and there is a strong dislike towards corrupt practices. The last 3 years have thoroughly exposed the institution and its leadership. Today Sharifs and Bhutto's are saint compared to military leadership of Pakistan. The Generals are the root cause of all evil in our beloved country and unless they are held accountable through a mass movement I do not see a future for Pakistan.
